It's so surreal to think that I will not be coming back to this place on Monday or even in September. And although I know I will visit, it'll never be the same.

I’m so overwhelmed that so many people liked yesterday’s post. Thank you.

On to what I read this week:

1. I haven’t finished it because it might be a billion words, but Paul Ford’s explanation of coding is incredible.

2. We all knew this already, but closing bookstores is a very bad idea.

3. Secret wedding boards on Pinterest are a big thing. (Full disclosure: I do not have one.)

4. This isn’t really a story, but I have to go to this yoga studio that plays Drake during class.

5. Some really astute points on typography in UI design.

And a bonus: Please watch the Wes Anderson version of “The Shining.”

Have a fantastic weekend!

Black-and-white June in Los Angeles.
Black-and-white June in Los Angeles.

Man oh man, this was an emotional week — and next week will be even worse. But here’s what I read:

1. The calligraphy stars on Instagram are some of my favorite accounts to follow.

2. Colson Whitehead brings up an incredible hyper-contemporary facet to “pics or it didn’t happen.”

3. This is a fascinating interview with Stephen Wolfram, the guy behind Wolfram Alpha.

4. Great career advice from Mickey Drexler.

5. Wisdom from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie to forget about being “likable.”

And a bonus: This brilliant comic about how all the paintings agree you are better off without him.

Have a wonderful weekend!

L.A. life.
L.A. life.

There were a few things I wanted to blog about (like my last capstone paper and the Time 100 list) that I just didn’t have time for. #TeamNoSleep, but that’s what next week is for. Anyways, here’s what I read this week:

1. The importance of coffee for Icelandic culture.

2. It’s comforting to know that even 20-something Jacques Derrida received some harsh criticism.

3. I was too young for Jennicam, but it sounds like a fascinating anthropological study.

4. I love Into the Gloss’s interviews, and one of this week’s was a good one.

5. FOGO is the new FOMO. (Side note: I’m not quite sure if fear-of-going-out really encapsulates what’s going on here, but it’s a start.)

And a bonus: I actually came across this last week and didn’t have space for it in my last Link Party, but look at this pencil shop (!!!!!!!)

Have a great weekend!

Here’s what I read this week:

1. These are the emails you get from Twitter when you don’t Tweet, follow anybody or log into the account.

2. This guy tried to analyze 18 years of his email, which amounted to nearly half a million messages.

3. The history behind and surrounding the Mark Rothko murals at Harvard is fascinating.

4. Most people don’t know that Lauren Bacall was a very eclectic collector.

5. The phrasal construction of verbs like “rage quit.”

And a bonus: Really cool and really rare photos of Frida Kahlo.

Have a great weekend!

This beach, you guys. This beach.
This beach, you guys. This beach.

Here’s what I read this week:

1. This really interesting comparison between evil soliloquies in Shakespeare and Robert Durst’s hot mic.

2. If you’ve ever been curious about how shows like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart get specific sound bites from news broadcasts and stuff like that, this is how they do it.

3. Ephemera on Instagram. (For the record, I love this kind of Instagram account.)

4. This guy tried to use a 56k modem for a week and found it to be nearly impossible.

5. I want to be a Pollock restorer.

And a bonus: Someone took a new Kendrick Lamar song and layered it over the Seinfeld theme song and it is perfect and you should listen.

Have a great weekend!

I think in some other life or alternate timeline I did something with plants because I. love. them.

A brief bit of unsolicited advice before I get to the link party: I just want to tell all of you that there is absolutely nothing that limits you from teaching yourself whatever you’re interested in and seeking out additional educational avenues. I wasn’t getting the writing experience I wanted from my academic classes or my job, so I took the initiative to start this blog and explore the things I wanted to talk about. The secret to getting started? Overcome the urge to be lazy. *drops the microphone and gets out of this bitch*

Here’s what I read this week:

1. The delineation of your IRL personality and your Internet personality, which is something I think about at least once a day.

2. A very interesting discussion about making references to other things, which is something I think about at least once a week.

3. This person wrote to The Awl’s advice column asking about how to move on from not getting a job at Buzzfeed, and all I can say is yikes.

4. Simple tips for success, presented graphically.

5. Not much to read on this one, but this scene from House of Cards is hands down one of the best in television history. Claire Underwood for president of the universe.

And a bonus: My new favorite Instagram account, @ihavethisthingwithfloors.

Have a fantastic weekend!

The view from the top of the Getty.

Here’s what I read this week:

1. This scientific study accidentally included a working citation of “(Should we cite the crappy Gabor paper here?)” I felt so many waves of secondhand embarrassment.

2. What makes a child an art prodigy?

3. If you haven’t seen Too Many Cooks yet, watch it and read this.

4. I agree with just about everything in this commentary on reading new books. “‘To read the Iliad, claims Roberto Calasso in The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony, is to appreciate that there is no progress in art. It’s hard not to agree. But that does not mean that everything has been done'” is my favorite quote.

5. The idea of someone reading my texts as I’m typing them is actually incredibly terrifying.

And a bonus: “You Wish” by Nightmares on Wax.

Have a great weekend!

It's still warm here, but I can feel the weather beginning to change.
It’s still warm here, but I can feel the weather beginning to change.

This week was crazy, and it looks like the pace will only increase. But I did have some time to read:

1. $3 gas in the United States is actually a really bad thing. I wondered why it was so low.

2. The history and etymology of the penny.

3. Has anyone else ever noticed that it’s always 9:41 on Apple products? The apple executive’s reasoning is genius, actually.

4. I am SO excited that LACMA was bequeathed with $500 million worth of incredible art.

5. What’s happening to the pastry? Depending on who you talk to, a lot of things.

And a bonus: Not an article, but a great first episode of this season’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

Have a great weekend! Let me know what you read by leaving a comment.
